Multiverse Monday: UltraGirl of Two Worlds and the first mention of The Purge

Two Earths, two UltraGirls, one trap. UltraGirl of Two Worlds, released on July 17, 2020, is the fourth episode of the prelude to Ultraverse Crisis, and the episode where the series first named its villain. This Multiverse Monday brings together everything we have written about it since 2021: the story, the fun facts, and what it set in motion.

The story

The UltraGirl of Earth AA (Ayla Aysel) and the UltraGirl of Earth MWM (Whitney Morgan) are on the trail of The Hunter when they are pulled, without knowing it, into the universe of The Hunter’s Lair. He captures and binds them one at a time. The Hunter keeps the two heroines for himself, but their power belts go to a mysterious buyer. When The Hunter asks what anyone could want with them, the buyer has only one answer: “A crisis is coming …” It was not the first sign of what lay ahead: that came one episode earlier, in UltraGirl Under Arrest.

The episode was written by SH Binder and produced by Jim Hunter’s Lair. It is available on Clips4Sale and at Jim Hunter’s Lair.

Fun facts

  • The title salutes “Flash of Two Worlds!” from The Flash #123 (September 1961), the story that introduced Earth-Two and, with it, the idea of a multiverse to DC Comics.
  • The buyer of the belts is The Purge, and this is the first time the series mentions him, the villain behind the whole Crisis. He is the counterpart to The Collector: if one collects, the other purges.
  • When Ayla wakes Whitney, Whitney blames chloroform and complains about the smell, a nod to a line from the Wonder Woman TV episode “Formula 407” in season 1.
  • Nick Law Arts drew a homage cover for the episode in the style of The Flash #123.

What came next

The belts did not stay quiet for long. Whitney Morgan returned three months later in UltraGirl: Countdown to Crisis (October 19, 2020), episode 12 of the prelude and a soft sequel to Two Worlds, this time alongside Carissa Dumond, again produced with GiGi and Jim at The Hunter’s Lair. Then all three came back together in UltraGirl: Zero Hour, where Ayla, Whitney and Carissa joined the rest of the cast for the opening of the Crisis itself.

The full prelude, episode by episode, is on the Ultraverse Crisis page, and our original write-up of this episode, with the preview clip and the homage cover, is UltraGirl of Two Worlds.

About Multiverse Monday

Every Multiverse Monday looks across the many Earths of UltraGirl: the heroines other producers and performers have created under the same name, and the stories where UltraGirls from different universes cross paths. If there is an UltraGirl or a story you would like to see featured, let us know.
